I was recently introduced to Lois Lowry, and am so glad I started reading her work. "The Birthday Ball" is not necessarily as poignant or, for that matter, pointed, as say, "Number the Stars", but it's still an adorable story with a nice (but unpreachy) moral - despite our circumstances in life, we are all just human.Princess Patricia Priscilla is not looking forward to her 16th birthday, when her parents (the King & Queen of course) will host her Birthday Ball, and she will have to chose a husband from a less-than-desirable group: The Duke of Desmond, a man looking eerily similar to a warthog with a disposition to match (angry); Prince Percival of Pustula, who always dresses in black and also has a disposition to match (depressed); and The Conjoint Twins, who were joined in the middle but agreed on nothing.
As an answer to her boredom, Princess PP switched clothes with her chambermaid, Tess. Thus disguised, the Princess went to the village school, where she became friends with the peasant children, learned a lot, and managed to change her life and those around her!
I don't want to give any more of the story away, but it is quite darling and amusing. The illustrations are a nice touch. Highly recommended.

My daughter loved this book. She found the romance between the princess and school teacher "heartwarming" and enjoyed the characters.
This is a fun & funny story. I already listened to the audio & bought the book for an adult friend of mine who enjoys stories about princesses. It's an amusing story, well-written & has a nice lesson tucked into the story without it being obvious.
I loved the book it was really amazing. At the beginning of the book who was the princess going to marry, you will find out who she was going to marry at the end. I would really recommend this book!!!
A funny, quirky book from the great Lois Lowry. This princess is grounded and no-nonsense and she does NOT want to have to wed one of the horrible princes that will attend her sixteen-year-old birthday ball. A fun, quick take on princesses and who exactly is a Prince Charming and why do we need one?
Lois Lowry's THE BIRTHDAY BALL is wonderful, hilarious fun. Anyone who enjoys word play will adore it.
Lowry takes a familiar fairy tale theme and turns it into a romp through a castle where she shows exactly how everything works, where royalty doesn't take itself too seriously, and where villains are over-the-top outrageous. It's a spirit that's captured beautifully in Jules Feiffer's delightful illustrations.
This is a book that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike, whether it's read alone or shared aloud. And, it's almost guaranteed to set you to finding new words to rhyme with delicious.
I loved the ending where Pat decided to choose the schoolmaster. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see who she would pick. I would recommend this book to people who like fiction, happy endings, and unexpected twists. I chose 5 stars because of many reasons. This book had such rich vocabulary. The characters have a spectacular sense of humor. And, I loved the twist ending.
Princess Patricia Priscilla is bored with her life and, worse, her 16th birthday ball is coming up and she has to make a choice between three horrible nobles from neighboring domains. To break up the monotony of her days, she decides to pretend to be a poor peasant named Pat and go to the village school where she meets an adorable “norphan” and an intriguing schoolmaster. I read The Birthday Ball out loud to my boys. It was fun, filled with entertaining wordplay. It was super predictable, as many children’s books are for adults, but that still didn’t spoil the sweet ending. I enjoyed it and so did the boys. Excellent family read aloud!
