UnBonded is an okay 3rd book in the series. Since the first 2 were so good, this one felt like a disappointment for me. This story is about Moira another human who gets abducted by the little green aliens and gets dumped on the alien planet with Gron and his clan. The reader knows that this is happening from books 1 and 2 but there was no description of this and Moira didn't remember. Kranu-Gron's older brother that got exiled and his friend Troii find her.

The first 1/3 of the book is Moira, Kranu and Troii existing together but unable to communicate. Of course the guys are interested because they don't have enough females on their planet but Moira is scared and uninterested for the majority of the book. The premise was a good set up for a sexy menage story but Moira wasn't having any of that. As a matter of fact either was Troii. It really was just grumpy Kranu that was interested.

They catch up with Ruth so she can communicate with Moira and she then isn't quite as scared but is only minimally interested in these potential mates. The relationship was an extremely slooooowwww build and didn't get going until the very end of the book. After that there was just an abrupt ending. When I finished I immediately thought the author was holding out to write a book 4 to finish their story.

I really loved the first 2 books in the series and would read a book 4 in hopes that the author takes us back to that same quality.

UnBonded Ruth Gron Book 3 eBook VC Lancaster Reviews

I have to say that Lancaster looks like she'll become one of my auto-purchase authors. They world she has created is wonderful, the characters act like actual people rather than acting as dictated by the script, and the writing itself is very engaging. I also loved how the characters were individuals with distinct personalities, and that this inevitably meant some clashing. Unfortunately, this story came a little short. If I could, I'd probably score this as more a 3.5 than a 4.

My one issue is that it doesn't feel as if the character arcs are complete for any of the viewpoint characters. Spoilers from this point onward.

Moira is understandably touchy. Being plopped on an alien planet is a little stressful, never mind two aliens immediately looking to shack up. This is actually a plus in my book. Her slight softening and getting fond of them is done very well, and she never tips over from being irritable to just being a witch. The problem is that she never really reached to final stage to me. Yes, she decided to stay on the planet, but that's really out of guilt. She doesn't reach any kind of acceptance or inner peace about the decision. Her getting with Troii and Kranu comes off as "Well, I'm here. Might as well accept a couple of sex-buddies and conform to the new norm." I don't mind her initiating the relationship this way, as she obviously cares about them even if she isn't really admitting it to herself. But I want her to admit it to herself. Right now I'm thinking there's a good change she'd abandon them if the grey aliens came back and said "Yeah, this experiment isn't working. You can go home, we won't grab any more women."

On Troii, I like that he is conflicted about possibly being bonded. I even like that he's a bit bitter and angry at first when it happens, being confused and dealing with new hormones. But he also never really accepts it, the way Gron did after it was a done deal. His outlook can be summed up as "Well, she bonded me. I know what I'm supposed to do now, guess I have to." At the end of the book his feelings about being bonded are not any more settled that they were before hand. He's with Moira because she and biology dictates it so, rather than him coming to the decision that he wants to be her mate and he loves her. Even his relationship with Kranu doesn't seem finished. He doesn't really see Kranu as a friend and equal. He's more patronizing, seeing that Kranu does have good points but kind of treating him like a child that needs to be reminded to play nice.

Lastly Kranu. Again, LOVE the character. I liked exploring the mind of a super type A person stuck where he's expected to be submissive. I even liked that he's combated it by being even more overconfident and developing a bit of a superiority/inferiority complex about it. But again, he doesn't reach any kind of inner peace. When he's tied to the tree there is a great moment where he seriously considers that he might have been wrong all these years. His feelings towards his family and Troii are excellent here. Then Moira bonds him and he goes, "YES, I KNEW I was right! I'm awesome." While he's obviously starting to develop real feelings for her, at the end he's still viewing her more as means to an end (getting the position he always wanted in life). He's decided to forgive Troii, but it still comes off has he knows he probably shouldn't drive off the single solitary person who can stand him. He doesn't like Troii, or see him as a valuable member of their ménage. I liked that he obviously didn't realize how much his treatment of Gron in the past hurt him, thinking of it as no big deal, but I want him to realize it at some point. He can stay type A and a little overbearing but learn how to get along with everybody better and be less grating. Learn that he doesn't have to overcompensate by being even more overbearing and aggressive. At the very end EVERYONE still thinks he's a complete maladjusted ass. It's just that now he's Moira's problem. He seems to think that being a bonded male will automatically equal respect (and maybe subconsciously understanding) and he's destined to find this isn't so. That's a meltdown/freakout just waiting to happen.

Maybe this will be like the 1st two books and the characters' arcs will be finished in a later book. But right now there isn't any hint of it. I really get the feeling that all three have firmly settled into this slightly dysfunctional dynamic, where they don't quite fit together and none are really okay with where they are in the grand scheme of things.
I've really enjoy all of Lancasters books in this series so far, and UnBonded was a nice addition. I know many readers were wary about this book and the turn in which the story would take, but I think it was a good choice and instead of detracting from the store, the Menage made sense. First of all, it made the story completely different from the previous two books, which in my opinion is a good thing. Many authors fall into the pitfall of making each book in a series too similar, and after a while that can get pretty boring. Not so with UnBonded. All the characters were real and sympathetic, the story flowed nicely and had very sweet, tender moments as well as some laugh out loud incidents that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I was surprised at how easily I fell into the story, siding with the new heroes right away and forgetting how they acted in the previous books. I would recommend this book to anyone who love alien romance, especially those who enjoy a Menage story where the heroine is in focus and both heroes are treated equally and given the same amount of pages to grow their character.
I struggled with this one. I really enjoyed books 1 and 2 of this series, and even with the language barrier with the main characters Ruth and Gron had a connection, a chemistry, and there was a charm and a feeling of romance to that couple. With this book, I had a hard time warming up to the heroine (this happened very late for me into the story), and I didn't get a feel for Kranu and Troii. I liked them, more so than Moira, but not enough time was spent with them all together building a relationship. It felt uneven to me.

I was frustrated and actually put the book down at about 43%. Left it for a couple of days, read other things, and only came back today determined to finish what I'd paid for, to see what might be in store for the series as a whole. The first part of the story felt so repetitive in places, and predictable, and it was a struggle to get to that 43% mark. Moira was starting to sound like blah, blah, blah in my head, it was boring, and I started skimming more.

Other than getting to the sex, which was good and steamy to read, I never got to that happy place where I felt good about all three people involved in this relationship. The last few chapters, with more one on one time with h/H/H helped, and the sex helped, but the ending felt rushed to me. A let down after enjoying the author's other efforts so much. M/F/M ménage, no M/M, no DP.
