Scrivener Essentials A quick start visual guide for Mac users.
Imagine if you could use Scrivener for Mac like a seasoned professional, knowing the keyboard shortcuts, what the tools on the toolbar do; flying through the application and creating an amazing story without being distracted by having to look up how to use a feature every time you want to use it.
In the back of your mind you know that the Scrivener software you bought is going to simplify your writing process and help you become more productive. You have heard about the cool split screen views, virtual cork boards and the collections feature where you can process all instances of a document at once even though you have it in several different collections.
But best of all you’ve heard that you can export your content to multiple platforms without having to change the original draft document! Imagine the time you are going to save. Not to mention that if you can format your own work for export you will no longer be held hostage to the whims and schedules of anyone else.
The problem is, before you can do all that, you have to learn how to use the Scrivener software. This can be time consuming if you try to learn from the Scrivener users manual which is highly technical and includes every conceivable function and feature of the software. Don’t get me wrong. The Scrivener users manual has every bit of information you will ever need regarding Scrivener because it is supposed to be like that, but it sure is difficult to weed out the bits that pertain to the project you want to write. I know because that is the way I had to learn it.
What I would have liked was a Scrivener essentials guide with
- Plenty of pictures, so that you can instantly recognize the regions of the user interface.
- Arrows pointing right at the buttons mentioned in the instructions, making them easy to find.
- No distracting instructions for Windows users that send you on a wild goose chase after functions that are not supported by Scrivener for Mac.
So I wrote a guide just like that. In it you will learn to
- Open a project and customize your workspaces.
- Toggle between normal Text Editing Mode, Cork Board Mode and Outlining Mode and how to use each of them as well as how to use the distraction-free Full-Screen Mode.
- Split your screen to have two documents or two versions of the same document open at once.
- Manage your files and folders, whether you are starting from scratch in Scrivener or want to import your content from another writing application pre-sorted into chapters or sections.
- Make use of Scrivener’s editing tools like collections and snapshots (which takes a snapshot of the current state of a document so that you can revert to it if you don’t like your subsequent edits.)
- Compile your work for export to your agent, as a paperback or as an eBook.
- How to download some tools so that you can preview your content before you send it out.

SCRIVENER ESSENTIALS Scrivener 2 for Mac Scrivener Quick Start Visual Guides eBook Karen Prince
This Mac edition of Scrivener Essentials is only 101 pages of images and very easy to follow. It is absolutely perfect for anyone who has trouble with written instructions. But don’t be fooled by its simplicity. There were several tips and functions I would never have thought of using if they had not been pointed out. I did not know, for instance, that you could get your work read back to you on a Mac.I would highly recommend you read through the whole book and then go back to the beginning before you start a project because some concepts are introduced later in the book that, if you knew of them, you would definitely use from the start. For instance, I thought using the Collections function would get too complicated but now that I have seen how it works I see the feature has definite possibilities for my future work.

SCRIVENER ESSENTIALS Scrivener 2 for Mac Scrivener Quick Start Visual Guides eBook Karen Prince Reviews
Brilliant! I purchased Scrivener to use for writing manuscripts because so many authors mentioned it. I bought it, installed it, tried to use it and left it. I figured I could finish writing an entire novel in Word before I'd ever figure out the complexities of Scrivener. Then, several weeks later, this popped up when I was viewing . Withing hours, I had imported all my work from Word into the program and was up and running. The advantages include not having multiple documents for each character, research, saves for deleted material, and the main manuscript but having everything right in front of you contained in the binder. Too much to wven describe here. What a life saver.
A writer friend recommended Scrivener after I had trouble formatting my book in Word. My fault, not Microsoft's! I am a complete technophobe! Scrivener is brilliant but I needed help, and I found Karen's book. I had it open on my iPad in front of my Mac and it was brilliant. It is very easy to follow with the graphics, and everything is laid out perfectly. A great book to have if you aren't computer savvy!
This is a book that I have bought both for the PC and on the Mac. I have read nearly every book that has been written on scrivener and I am pleased to say that Karen's books suit me the best and I think they are excellent. She clearly shows the features of the program in an elegant and simple way and she rapidly moved my ability to use Scrivener ahead. I had used a similar program previously, but did not find the scrivener tutorial as useful as I had hoped as I do enjoy the visual way that she teaches. It is easy to go through the book quickly, but strangely there is a considerable amount of content that is very helpful. I do not have any reservations about this book whatsoever in either version. I use Scrivener on both a PC and a Mac And each version is a little different. I would highly recommend the book and this author.
I had purchased Scrivener four years ago, attempted to use it and decided the learning curve wasn't worth the effort, even after I had spent far too much money on how to use the software that merely complicated matters.
Now, four years later I discover Karen Prince's excellent Scrivener Essential books and I am purchasing the latest Scrivener. This time I know I will be able to learn to use the program properly. An excellent guide book.
If you are a visual learner, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I
powered through it in a couple of hours and then loaded it on my desktop
beside my Scrivener software, went through the step by step process and had a
project up and running within minutes.
I fully understand the layout, I have chosen the exact tools I want to have on the
toolbar, I have set my spelling to USA and tweaked the colors of the interface the
way I want them. I have done my first mock-up on the cork board and I’m ready
to go. I even managed to color code the index cards on my cork board so that I
know exactly what to do with them next. I am so excited. I am really tempted by
Compose Mode because it looked like such a tranquil way to work in the guide.
You can put a nice image behind your pages instead of all the clutter of the
interface, but I already know I am better at plotting my manuscript out first so I’m
sticking with the cork board for now.
If you are looking for a crash course for Scrivener software that cuts right to the
chase this is it.
I strongly recommend this book by Karen Prince for anyone interested in using Scrivener! It's a full 96 pages of well-written, easy-to-follow step by step instructions for every aspect of using the program, along with helpful tips from the author. Not only is it much easier to follow than the instructions provided with the program, it has detailed pictures/drawings on each page that make the instructions even clearer. The combination of good, clear and concise writing and well done illustrations in this book make the program quick to learn and easy to understand. It definitely deserves five stars!
If you're new to Schrivener, like I was, this is a no-brainer purchase. I started out with Scrivener's own tutorial as my guide but abandoned it shorty into the process. While it was easy to follow, I got bogged down in the minutiae particularly since I was chomping at the bit to start writing. I took someone else's advise on here and downloaded this guide to my iPad. I spent about an hour reading through it a couple of times. From there, I was ready to go. I successfully and painlessly set up my first project, using the page by page content displayed on my iPad. I still go back to Schrivener's tutorial and will continue to do so as my proficiency increases but for those starting out, this guide is invaluable. Highly recommend.
