Al-Ghazzali begins his masterful Alchemy of Happiness with this topic based on the famous Tradition of the Prophet, “One who knows one’s self, knows one’s Lord.” In al-Ghazzali’s view, everything begins by knowing who you are. This is the first of the forty some odd chapters of Alchemy of Happiness. Although Ghazali wrote Alchemy of Happiness as a persian summary of Ihya, he added a few extra chapters to the beginning titled "On Knowing Yourself", "On Knowing This World" etc. So even if you've read Ihya you may want to check them out.
As for this edition, I am definitely not satisfied with the edition. The footnotes are completely absent let alone linked. Besides each book in this series contains exactly the same intorduction and bibliography which is longer than the main content.So you think you bought a book but what you actually get is a couple of pages from the Alchemy.
There is another translation of Alchemy freely available at "ghazali org". It's not inferior to this one at all but it's in un-OCRed pdf format.
Still it's good to have multiple translations. And I think I will keep buying the other chapters as I go.
Amazing book. Gotta read it. I've been Muslim my whole life and have also studied many other religions, especially Christianity and Taoism, and have not come across many of the profound and fascinating ideas that are carefully explained in this book.
