Heartbreaking. We all know how the story of the American Indians ends, but gosh darn it, I wish the author would have lived in my fairy tale world whereby the Indians live their lives and the "Whites" can live their lives side-by-side peacefully. I know, I know, I know, you are rolling your eyes. But this book was a fascinating sequel to Dances with Wolves (which I have watched the movie so many times, I can actually speak some Sioux) and I was eager to know what happened to the characters. You will learn what happens to your favorite characters and that is good but it is sad at the same time. With all that said, I still recommend this book. I just hated it to end because I knew how it ends.

Blake is masterful in telling the "rest of the story" concerning Dances with Wolves and the Comanches. I came away with an immense sense of loss both for the native Americans and for the land that was a victim of greed by the white people. This book is far better than the first of his books which won the most acclaim. The final sentence will pierce your soul!
Holy Road describes the White Man's belief that the entire nation belonged to the USA. The great Plains Indians had lived on this beautiful land for many centuries. They were now being driven into reservations, taking away their way of life. They tried to fight, but the powerful military of the USA was too large and strong. The ending brought tears to my eyes. I could not put the book down.
Loved Dances with Wolves. Liked and enjoyed this book very much. It is worth reading for the story, the history and as a conclusion to Dances with Wolves. Note It doesn't pick up exactly where the first book ended, but it is OK.
This was the perfect follow up to Dances With Wolves. At times, it was a little diffIcult to read because the author's descriptions were so graphic. It was sad to read how badly our Native Americans were treated. It makes you wonder what this country might have been like if the white man had approached the Indian population in a different manner for the white man had much to learn. I read Dances With Wolves twice and I can promise you that I will read this book again.
Some parts of this book I liked a lot. Some of it was frankly dull. The slow moving first half of the book left me cold. The pace of the book picked up toward the middle of the book and then the book ended in what can only be called a perfunctory manner. I sensed the writer lost track of what he wanted to do with the story and ended it because he couldn't get the story under control. I give it four stars because I liked the story as a whole. But unless you can wade through 150 pages to get to a well paced story, don't bother with this one.
I enjoyed ‘Dances With Wolves’ so that I was greatly looking forward to reading this lengthy sequel. Blake evidently put a lot of effort into it but I found it hard going. The plot is a lot broader than the first instalment and that was one issue the novel presents itself as a hunt for abducted relatives but the hunt is just one strand in a lot of other sub-plots. Of itself that’s not an issue except that the other sub-plots are hard to get into, and the scenes based on secondary (or primary? which is another issue) characters’ introspection really bogs down the narrative. There is little dialogue and less pace, and barely a single description of the physical settings. Yes the ending is sad but that doesn’t compensate for the constant feeling of hollowness I had throughout my reading.
I enjoyed reading Dances with Wolves & this book The Holy Road is the sad conclusion to the story. It goes into detail about what happened to the Range Indians who were pretty much annihilated by the army. The hunters destroyed the buffalo herds for their tongues & skin wiping out thousands of the animals that the Indians depended on to survive.
A reminder that genocide doesn't solve any problems. The Native Americans couldn't understand the settlers coming & owning all the land that they had freely roamed.
The lasting impression I got from these two books is if we could go back & do it differently we could have coexisted with the Plains Indians instead of taking everything from them and making them 100% dependent on the Government for their food & housing...and taking away their pride in earning their own livelihood.
It seems that we never learn from history and continue to make the same mistakes over & over.
This is a set of books will stay with you long after you have read the last page..
