Striking, raven-haired Cecile produces the finest lemons on the Riviera. Her ice creams, pies, lemonades, sold on her stall at the internationally famous Cannes market, are as renowned as the Mediterranean city itself. Tourists travel from everywhere to meet her.

But Cecile is a woman who no one draws close to, a woman with a secret.

Cecile, when she was nineteen and a shy student, travelled south to a lemon festival on the borders of Italy and France. She was intending to let her hair down, to enjoy two crazy weeks of fun. She was not anticipating the enigmatic Italian who offered her a future beyond her wildest dreams. But at what cost?

The Girl in Room Fourteen is a heartrending love story set on the warm shores of the Mediterranean.

Carol Drinkwater is a multi-award winning actress who is best known for her portrayal of Helen Herriot in the BBC television series, All Creatures Great and Small.

Carol is the author of twenty books, both fiction and non-fiction, and has achieved bestselling status, over a million copies sold worldwide, with her series of memoirs set on an Olive Farm in the south of France.

The Girl in Room Fourteen Single eBook Carol Drinkwater

I absolutely loved this novel by Carol Drinkwater, author of the non-fiction series The Olive Farm: A Memoir of Life, Love, and Olive Oil in the South of France. Her first (that I know of) hand at writing fiction in The Girl in Room Fourteen (Kindle Single) is mesmerizing from page one. We meet Cecile, the most accomplished, successful lemon grower in the area. While we know this much about her, just as with anyone we think we know, we find there is so much more to her. She has an entire love story that has touched her entire life, in every way.

While I don't want to give anything away, I will tell you, this is a perfect book for readers who love a well-written story. You are taken to a time, a place, so well-told that you feel you are a part of everything. You will smell the incredible lemons, right down to her lemon cheesecake. You will feel her love story, her torment, everything.

I give this my highest praise. It would make a PERFECT gift for just about any adult reader. It's lovely and fine. It's also a story that you and your friends can discuss after reading, sharing it as a fine wine.

Highest praise and I can't wait for the next novel by Carol.

The Girl in Room Fourteen Single eBook Carol Drinkwater Reviews

The minute you start reading about the mysterious lady seliing lemon products in the square, you are drawn in. How did this lovely lady become the owner of such wonderful lemon groves? Did she restore the groves and wonderful villa?

There are many questions and answers. This is about a true romance. A very enjoyable book.
A beautiful love story as refreshing as the lemons involved in this story. I whished it wasn't as short but everything needed to say its there and set in a great part of France and a bit of Italy. I wish to be there.
Maybe not the type of contemporary romance with too descriptive (and more or less all the same!) sex scenes and HEA ending but
all the better. Still love and very positive ending.
This is a short story so beautifully written that you don't want it to end, because for a short while you are there in the south of France. I have travelled to Cannes and up into the hills above the city. The author describes the scene with such clarity that I can see Cecile's little citrus farm. Can't you almost smell the lemons? A lovely, sweetly, sad story that somehow leaves you feeling warm and hopeful rather than sad. More please. Love Carol Drinkwater.
A nice little VERY short story. I like C Drinkwater's style, she writes well and keeps you interested, I found this book a little light, the sort you would find in a Womans's Own magazine years ago. Not bad, I enjoyed the descriptions of France which are always colourful in Carol's books, I think you could probably read it in an afternoon, knowing that and not expecting more, it's OK
Bittersweet!!!! As sweet as a lemon coins the phrase. Enjoyable, quick and easy to read, no- demands to lift up nor put down to read this quirky love story with an inevitable happy go lucky ending. Almost predictable, it's free flowing once-off read is enjoyable and pleasant.
I thought the book was very interesting and a good read. This woman had never given up hope that the man she loved would come back into her life and also have a relationship with the daughter he did not know he had. Sometime situations in life just don't come about the way we want them to. Like the Bible says Love is kind and love is patient and is not puffed up. This woman truly loved this man with all her heart, and he loved her but his family obligations keep them apart and he died before they could be re united.
The plot of this short novel is fairly simple. It is the story of a young Frenchwoman who has an affair with a dashing, older Italian man. He arranges for her to take title to a large lemon farm in southern France, which becomes quite successful. They have a beautiful teenaged daughter. But they never live together due to his commitments to his family in Italy, and the woman rarely receives any messages from him. Finally, she learns from his nephew that he had died two years previously.

The glory of this work is Ms. Drinkwater's writing. Her literary style soars with her descriptions of the southern French locale, the love affair, and much else. She is more of a painter than a writer - regaling us with a pallet of vivid colors and hues. She is a grand chef whose menu varieties never seem to end.

If you want to read an English novel written at its highest level, you should read "The Girl in Room Fourteen". It is a verbal feast!
