***SPOILERS***Two strangers met in a foreign land and spent all of 4 days together and that had an impact and finally destroyed their future relationship with other people? Never mind that all they have had of each other were good looks and good sex.
The main character, Celine, is selfish, ungrateful and immature. She slept with a married man, Patrick, had 4 days together but that didn't stop her to shamefully ask him to leave his wife for her. They broke up when he refused and returned to his wife, but not before he proposed that she follow him and be his mistress. She turned it down of course.
Now ten years on she met a kind and loving Mike and he married her despite knowing she was still pining for a man she had had a 4 day love affair with. Never mind all the love and kindness he has showered her during their 10 year marriage she was still pining and fantasizing about her 4 day love/lust affair with Patrick. I am surprised Mike didn't dump her earlier . I mean how does a husband feel minutes after buying his wife a £2000.00 diamond ear studs she bolts off leaving him standing in the middle of the street running after a man she thought her former long lost 4 day lover? This poor husband stayed for another 3 years!!!
This is a crazy plot, unbelievable and impossible. People do remember their first love. But 4 days sleeping with a married stranger is hardly a great love affair. And not the kind you would risk losing a 10 year marriage with a good man for.
Halfway through the book I was no longer interested in Celine/Patrick's story. I skimmed through looking for anything about Mike. Wanting to know that he finally finds someone else who deserves his love and that he finally gets over that ungrateful ex-wife of his.

The Last Time We Met Carol Mason 9781503902558 Books Reviews
this book is much more reality based than other "romance"/"relationship" books i've read. it's not silly or exaggerated, and no cartoony characters here. while i can appreciate many other takes on the subject of love, even sometimes a soap-opera style one, this book is about a woman's take on her relationships, past and present, without tons of drama and angst. just a quiet, tasteful, even melancholy look at her life.
i found the writing to be very good, the thoughts expressed to be poignant and well reasoned, leaving room for that unexplainable, perhaps illogical feeling of "rightness" or "wrongness" in love. quite a bit of the novel has to do with the main characters' marriage, and her relationship with her husband and child. the setting is very lovely and far from london, in the north of england. some of the expressions and way of speaking are purely "brit speak"- just fyi for those who may not have encountered this before. context should be all that's required to understand.
this is a very pleasant book-the general feeling of the book is so low key and kindly- it's very highly recommended. i really enjoyed it a lot.
How do you know when a long-standing relationship is over, when to hang on to it for dear life in the hope that it is salvageable, and when it's just a dream of love?
I really liked this book. This is the first book that I have read from this author. I will keep my eye out for her other books.
For me, this novel built quietly and was thoughtfully presented by the author. One of the things that I always like in a romantic book is a sense of realism. Even if the book is fantasy, futuristic, historic, I like the characters to think/feel like real sensient beings. The author interweaves this introspective book with snippets of wisdom that seem born from real life trials and heartbreaks.
I like to mix up my romance genres, and this was a breath of fresh air, especially when you've had your fill of vampires, werewolves, and post-apocalyptic novels for a while. Just my two cents, but it's such a relief to not be pounded with sexually explicit content with no plot or look into the thoughts of the characters. I need to know why a character falls in love (not a fan of insta-lust relationships).
I don't see the heroine as weak as some reviewers have alluded. Let's face it; we all have our moments of doubt, of indeciseveness, vulnerability & struggle. What we present to the world is not always what's going on internally. We can only grow in character when we look deep within ourselves, see our strengths and flaws, and make the best decisions we can based on who we are at that moment in time. I feel that this book shows this. Knowing the history of the characters in this novel helps you to see this process better than other books I've read recently. I appreciate that immensely.
So, yes, this book isn't full of action/adventure, but it has subtle humor, verity, and relationships. It has a conclusion (no cliff hanger or serial novel here). I would recommend this book to a friend.
