This sixth installment in the Pennyroyal Green series - focusing on Dryden the Marquess and Phoebe the schoolteacher - easily merits five stars for its interesting plot, appealing characters, and often lovely prose (e.g., "When he shifted his feet, she could almost sense the lovely slide of muscles beneath the black coat he wore with the same casual grace a panther wears its pelt."). Unfortunately, some of my pet peeves with other books in the series reappeared: typos like in "I Kissed an Earl," fanciful levels of introspection a la "Like No Other Lover" (really, an internal monologue from a character criticizing their own use of metaphor in a previous thought?), and a wee bit of clumsy repetition and heavy-handed foreshadowing like "Since the Surrender." I also wasn't crazy about the book not featuring a Redmond or an Eversea as a protagonist, though I quickly got pulled in anyway. Despite these flaws, I still could hardly put the book down. With Long though, anything short of perfection is disappointing, since she's so clearly capable of it.

** 4.5 stars, because that ending totally won me over **

I am so in love with the Pennyroyal Green Series. I feel as if it has taken over my reading life, and am happy for it. The Eversea and Redmond families are enigmatic and passionate and always surprising, and given that, I wasn't sure how How the Marquess Was Won would work without either family playing a leading part.

Maybe I overthink these things...

How the Marquess Was Won was terrific. It was thoughtful and funny, and very sweet. Despite some very large bumps in the road to Happy Ever After (I'm looking at you, Jules), it very much had a fairy tale feel to it.

It is a story of Phoebe, who has never truly belonged to any one or any place, and Julian, who carries a lifetime of burdens on his shoulders, who is feared and imitated, but has never been truly known. From the moment the two meet, there's a...feeling of rightness. That moment when you just know you've found your person. (best feeling in the world)

This knowing does not mean smooth sailing for Phoebe and Jules. Nope. He's determined to marry the right girl in order to get what he wants, and Phoebe, sadly, isn't it. She's just a schoolmistress, good enough to teach the girls but not good enough to be one of them. Theirs is a relationship that is just not done in society, but you know how that goes....

Looking at what I've said here, I realize I'm not painting the romance between Phoebe and Jules in the best of light. Honestly, it wasn't always winsome. He had his eyes on the prize (a Redmond cousin who comes with everything he's always wanted), and sometimes his thoughtelessness broke Phoebe's heart. Believe me when I say he earned his redemption. Jules gives good grovel.

And OH. How the Marquess Was Won also gives delicious little morsels in the ongoing Lyon-Olivia saga. I have to admit one revelation felt like a smart little slap in the face, and my excitement for their book continues to build by the day. And Jonathan Redmond. That boy is the best.

How the Marquess Was Won is not my favorite in the Pennyroyal Green Series. A Notorious Countess Confesses still holds my heart. But once again, any book in this series is always the best of historical romance.
This is the second JAL book I have read and it I stayed up until 2AM to finish it. I had to know if Lisabeth Redmond got her just desserts. Although she did receive punishment it wasn't good enough for me.

Let me start from the beginning. Julian Dryden, the Marquess, has had a load of responsibility since he was 17 years old. He gets a lot of attention in the broadsheets and is said to be searching for a wife. That is where Lisabeth comes in because Dryden is courting her in order to get some land from her father. That is how he gets his nickname because everything to Dryden is an arrangement or simply done with purpose.

Phoebe Vale is in her early twenties, a school teacher and loves to read the broadsheets. I liked how her and Jules first meet and the sparks between them ignite in an instant. She speaks to him as no one else does. After their initial meeting neither one thinks they'll ever see the other again. Well as fate would have it Phoebe has a accepted to be the paid companion to Lisabeth.

It was so excruciatingly painful to watch the cruelty done to Phoebe's character. Lisabeth always making her aware of their class separation and ordering her about. I hated how Phoebe allowed Lisabeth to treat her never fighting back or saying a harsh word. Even Dryden made it obvious to Phoebe of there difference and his true intention. I like my heroins with more spunk and feisty.

I laughed at how the ton watched Jules every move thinking everything he did was calculated, it usually was. The closer he gets with Phoebe things start to unravel. The forelock and the Dryden dance moves were so hilarious. You will die laughing at the images of a love story being told at a ball and in the mist are these woman spinning by like a whirlwind and men going on all fours. Too funny!

I loved Phoebe so much better when she drank. I felt at least then she expressed herself. The pain was inevitable one night at a ball when Lisabeth humiliates Phoebe in front of everyone. I could just feel all her pain and wanted to cry right along with her. Hey, I wasn't popular in school either so I could relate. Lisabeth was such a cruel person and known for her beauty and poor Phoebe who never hurt no one was so abused by her and Jules.

I really felt she let Dryden off too easy on several occasions. I did enjoy the book but I admit Lisabeth deserved far worse than what she received and I wish we could have read how Phoebe finally stood up to her. I do believe that this book took some years off of my life. Even though the ending was nice the road to get there messed with my head a bit. The separation of the classes is very prominent in this and very aggravating.

I gave it four stars because I would have liked to have a stronger heroin with a little more Harlow Hoyden in her. If you want a story with a feisty heroin readThe Harlow Hoyden A Regency Romance. Lisabeth wouldn't have stood a chance.
